Time-based services

We charge for most services by the hour. Our rates vary depending on difficulty and extent. Charging normally takes place in 15-minute increments, although a minimum duration may apply.

Translation rates

The price of a translation service is primarily based on the length of the text. One of the most common units of measurement is the so-called translator's page, which equals 1,560 characters. It is unrelated to the layout pagination of e.g. a PDF or Microsoft® Word document.

The total length of a text can also be measured in words. In English and Swedish texts, the average word length is often approximately 5.5 characters, while the corresponding mean value in Finnish texts may be around 7.5.

For pricing purposes, the length of a text is determined using the source. For example, if we translate a text from English to Finnish, we count the number of characters in the English version. This is easy to do using the Word Count toolbar in Microsoft Word. Again, difficulty and volume affect the price.

Length-based pricing requires that we can perform the translation efficiently. We would therefore ask you to email us the source as a plain text, RTF, Word or PDF file. Image files or copy-protected PDF files do not qualify, as the text cannot readily be copied off them.

If we cannot price a translation assignment according to text length, we will instead offer to charge for it by the hour.

Standby

We can offer you a standby service at a reduced rate. This allows you to ensure beforehand that we will be available for you at your chosen time, should you need us. The standby rate does not apply to active work performed during the standby period; in other words, for any given time span, you will be charged for either standby or active work, not for both.

The standby service is subject to availability – please book early!

After hours

We may be able to perform urgent work also between 18:00 and 9:00 local time (16:00–7:00 UTC, or 15:00–6:00 UTC during DST), as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. A surcharge will apply.

Expenses

Whatever the pricing basis, we will charge you separately for any expenses (such as application fees) paid on your behalf.
